With warmer weather upon us many pets are left outside to enjoy the sunshine, which increases the chances pets getting lost. Last year there were more than 1,100 reports of missing pets; unfortunately not all were reunited with their families. Please make sure your pet has proper identification tags and/or is microchipped. City of Gillette Animal Control Supervisor Phyllis Jassek gives some helpful tips below. You can also read an article posted on Basin's Radio News Network.
Yay! A blog. And more importantly, one that's focused on all things animals. For my first post, I wanted to share a story of one super energetic pup named Dozer. See, Dozer, a goldendoodle, has an abundance of energy -- he joined more than 2,000 people running the Maryland Half Marathon on May 15, 2011, a race that benefits the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center. And then he ran back home. Impressive. I first heard about this marathon running dog via The Barks eNewsletter in an article dubbed A Dog's Gotta Run by Rebecca Wallick. (Yes, I read a magazine dubbed The Bark, and honestly, you may wanna check it out.) And then I watched the video. Isn't it amazing that Dozer, someone's mischievous and energetic pup, has helped raise thousands of dollars for the fight against cancer just because 2,000 people happened to jog past his house one fine May day? I think it is. I also think it is amazing that three friends came together one midsummer eve with the sole purpose of sipping margaritas and laughing, but ended up establishing the beginnings of the Fur Kids Foundation. The Foundation has been a labor of love for the board members, and we've received wonderful support from the Gillette community — both financially and with volunteers. Since we met our fundraising goal in September, after a successful Pet-A-Palooza, we have helped more than five families and contributed nearly $1,000 in aid. With the help of Animal Medical Center of Wyoming, we have given away four spay and neuter procedures and helped to educate the community of the importance of spaying and neutering their animals. And we've just begun. PSST: We hope you save the date for our next Pet-A-Palooza (hint, it's September 14) and please let us know if there are any vendors, contests, or educational pieces you would like to participate in at the event. If you aren't already, please consider following us on Facebook, or sign up for our enewsletter.
