Peggy Seppala
The Fur Kids Foundation board of directors wants to give a huge shout out to Peggy Seppala as the April 2016 Volunteer of the Month! Peggy is the mother of FKF founder Felicia and has volunteered with the Foundation since 2012. Peggy helps the Foundation with trash clean-ups at CAM-PLEX, with weeding the flower garden by CAM-PLEX every summer, holding events such as Pet-A-Palooza and Pooch Plunge, and often thinks of other ways to help the Foundation raise money. Most recently, Peggy donated a large, gently used, Igloo dog house for the Foundation to sell or use at an event. Peggy also often donates items for our silent auction or raffles at events. In her spare time, Peggy enjoys teaching her dogs agility, running and hiking. We greatly appreciate all of the help Peggy gives to the Foundation to help us raise money and we encourage all of our volunteers to help us as well. Below are a couple of suggestions on how you can help the Foundation raise money this year:
In April 2016, Fur Kids Foundation had 10 families apply for assistance, and we were able to help eight of those families (with one still in progress)—for a total of $1,528.43 given in aid. Below is a rundown of the cases we provided assistance to:
Bemo is 3-year-old orange tabby kitty. Like most kitties we've dealt with, Bemo is a master at getting into situations that tests his nine lives. Somehow, his most recent escapade resulted in Bemo ripping off part of his toe! Outch!
Bemo clearly had to go to the vet, after all he was missing a piece of his toe. His parents brought him to the vet where he was given an evaluation and some meds. Bemo’s parents weren’t prepared for the bill. When the vet told them about Fur Kids Foundation, they applied for assistance. We are happy to report that Bemo is on his way to making a full recovery. If you would like to help Fur Kids Foundation continue to help families with animals, please consider making a tax-deductible donation. The money helps families during a time when they may not be able to afford adequate veterinary care. Check out more Success Stories. Meet Sissy, a beautiful, 15-year-young cat with advanced periodontitis and an abscess that was draining into her skin. Even with a slow cancer, Sissy is a relatively healthy cat, but she was quite uncomfortable because of her teeth.
Periodontitis is a result of periodontal disease, and it’s completely preventable but usually under-treated, according to the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC). The most common symptom of peridontal disease is bad breath, but visible plaque and tartar on the teeth can also be a sign of the disease. Periodontal disease begins when bacteria in the mouth creates plaque that sticks to the surface of the teeth. Plaque will then harden to form tartar, which is visible above the gum line. The real problem develops when the bacteria begins to damage the supporting tissues around the tooth, eventually leading to the loss of the tooth; this is called periodontitis. If left untreated, the AVDC says that periodontal disease may cause multiple problems in the mouth, including bone infections and weakening the jaw bone, and may be associated with damage to internal organs in some patients as they age. Sissy's mom receives social security and has a part-time job. She is very good at budgeting within her means, but she just couldn't find the funds to get Sissy feeling better, so she reached out to Fur Kids Foundation for help. We are very happy to report that the vet was able to remove some bad teeth and clear up her infection and she's feeling much better. If your pet has tartar or large amounts of plaque present a professional dental cleaning is highly recommended. Be sure to speak with your vet about how you can maintain your pet’s dental health from home after a dental cleaning.
