This is Luna, a 5-year-old Chihuahua. Luna had babies in May, and in the middle of July she did not want to walk – but what was really alarming was that Luna suddenly started urinating blood. Her mom knew she needed to get her to a veterinarian immediately.
At the vet it was discovered that poor Luna had a pretty terrible urinary tract infection. This was causing Luna severe discomfort, which is why she wasn't wanting to walk, and causing the blood in her urine. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, some common UTI symptoms include:
Urinary tract infections are serious on their own; however, if left untreated they can lead to dysfunction of the lower urinary tract, kidney or bladder stones, inflammation of the prostate gland, infertility, blood poisoning, and even kidney infection and kidney failure. And, some symptoms could be a sign of something far more serious than even a UTI–for more information, you can check out this article from the AKC, Does Your Dog Have UTI Symptoms or Something Worse? Luna's mom only has one income, and had some other unplanned expenses the month before, so she didn't know how she was going to pay for Luna's visit. She applied to Fur Kids Foundation for assistance with Luna’s emergency veterinary care. After a full exam and medication, Luna is expected to make a full recovery. Whether your dog’s symptoms are just a UTI or something more, it’s important to find out for sure. If your dog is exhibiting UTI symptoms, Fur Kids Foundation encourages you to call your veterinarian sooner rather than later. If there is one thing we've learned about puppies and kittens, it is that they are fearless and adventurous, which can sometimes get them into a bit of trouble. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened with Bear. Bear was playing on the couch, when she decided to pull a Superwoman move and jump off the tall couch–resulting in her leg breaking in two places! Bear's mom rushed her to the vet. Fortunately, with Bear's age, size, and how clean the fractures were, surgery was needed and would help get Bear back on her feet in no time. According to the Pet Health Network, one may think that puppies are resilient and strong, but their bones are quite fragile. Our pups’ bones don’t reach their maximum strength until after puberty; when their bones are not as dense, the potential for fractures (or breaks) increases. Signs that a puppy has fractured a bone may include:
If your puppy displays these symptoms, seek help from your veterinarian immediately, as symptoms can worsen as time passes. Bear's mom tried finding ways to raise enough money for the surgery; savings, Care Credit, etc., but on a fixed income, she was not able to afford the whole procedure. She applied with Fur Kids Foundation, and we were happy to help her afford this emergency surgery for Bear. Bear is going to have to contain her puppy energy for the next few weeks while her leg heals, and stop jumping off of furniture. For an accurate diagnosis of your pet's condition, Fur Kids Foundation encourages you to make an appointment with your veterinarian. Please note: Don’t think that your puppy’s developing bones mean that you shouldn’t play or exercise them. Just know what type of exercise and play is appropriate. Your veterinarian can help you determine this by considering the breed, age, weight, and overall health. Questions to ask your veterinarian about your puppy:
