This is Luna, a 5-year-old Chihuahua. Luna had babies in May, and in the middle of July she did not want to walk – but what was really alarming was that Luna suddenly started urinating blood. Her mom knew she needed to get her to a veterinarian immediately.
At the vet it was discovered that poor Luna had a pretty terrible urinary tract infection. This was causing Luna severe discomfort, which is why she wasn't wanting to walk, and causing the blood in her urine. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, some common UTI symptoms include:
Urinary tract infections are serious on their own; however, if left untreated they can lead to dysfunction of the lower urinary tract, kidney or bladder stones, inflammation of the prostate gland, infertility, blood poisoning, and even kidney infection and kidney failure. And, some symptoms could be a sign of something far more serious than even a UTI–for more information, you can check out this article from the AKC, Does Your Dog Have UTI Symptoms or Something Worse? Luna's mom only has one income, and had some other unplanned expenses the month before, so she didn't know how she was going to pay for Luna's visit. She applied to Fur Kids Foundation for assistance with Luna’s emergency veterinary care. After a full exam and medication, Luna is expected to make a full recovery. Whether your dog’s symptoms are just a UTI or something more, it’s important to find out for sure.
