This beautiful pup is Harley, an 8-year-old Aussie mix. Harley was given to his mom as a gift from her late brother, so she has a special bond with the pup. Harley's mom is also on a limited income of Social Security, so when he began coughing, she became very worried.
The coughing started small, and she kept an eye on it. But then it was getting to the point that Harley was coughing every time he got up and would walk around. His mom knew she had to get him to the vet ASAP. At the vet it was discovered that Harley had kennel cough. According to Fetch by WebMD: “Dogs ‘catch’ kennel cough when they inhale bacteria or virus particles into their respiratory tract. This tract is normally lined with a coating of mucus that traps infectious particles, but there are a number of factors that can weaken this protection and make dogs prone to kennel cough infection, which results in inflammation of the larynx (voice box) and trachea (windpipe).” The classic symptom of kennel cough is a persistent, forceful cough that often sounds like a goose honk. Some other signs of kennel cough can include sneezing, a runny nose, or even eye discharge. Kennel cough is VERY contagious, so if you think your pup may have it, it's highly recommended to keep them away from other pets and contact your vet immediately. Dogs who receive the Bordetella vaccine are much less likely to get kennel cough. Most dogs recover within three weeks, though it can take up to six weeks in senior dogs or those with additional medical conditions. Please be aware that serious, ongoing kennel cough can lead to pneumonia if you don’t follow up with your veterinarian if your dog doesn't improve within the expected amount of time. Harley was given antibiotics and his mom will monitor him going forward. Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery. These adorable kitties are Yoshi and Shadow, both are 2-years-old. Their mom recently left an abusive relationship and is working on starting over.
“They are my best friends. I would be heartbroken if they were not here to greet me every day,” says Yoshi and Shadow's mom. Yoshi and Shadow are free to go outdoors as they please. Recently, their mom noticed that both of them had bite marks and gashes all over them. Their mom said from that day forward they were only going to be indoor cats, but as she monitored the wounds she noticed that they became significantly worse, so she applied to Fur Kids Foundation for assistance. At the vet it was discovered both of the kitties did have infected bite wounds—luckily only one needed to be sedated and receive stitches. Both Shadow and Yoshi were put on antibiotics to help clear up the infection. For those who don’t know, cats carry a lot of bacteria in their mouths that are capable of causing infections in bite wounds. If you know that your cat has been in a fight, Fur Kids Foundation encourages you to notify your veterinarian immediately. Veterinarians can tell you that antibiotics given within 24 hours will often stop the spread of infection and may prevent the development of an abscess – a swelling filled with pus, and that usually involves more medical treatment (and more money spent). According to a paws.org story, “Keeping your cat happy indoors,” free-roaming outdoor cats are at risk for a shortened life, while a cat that stays indoors or uses an enclosed catio may live up to 15 years or more. Indoor cats are usually healthier, too, which saves on veterinary bills for treatment of contagious diseases, parasites, and abscesses from fights with other animals. We're very happy to hear that Yoshi and Shadow's mom is going to keep her kitties indoors for now on.
