This is Bouncer, a 7-year-old puggle (a beagle mixed with a pug, if you didn’t already know). His parents adopted him a few years ago. They learned that his previous owners only fed him hot dogs and bologna, which they believed caused a lot of tartar build up on his chompers. Throughout the years, Bouncer's teeth only got worse, causing him a lot of discomfort. Along with his bad teeth, Bouncer also had a cherry eye, a red bulge in the corner of his eye. According to an article in The Honest Kitchen, The Truth About Tartar Buildup on Your Dog’s Teeth: “(Tartar) starts its journey on your dog’s teeth as plaque, which begins to form hours after a dog eats. As plaque combines with the salts found in dog saliva, it builds up and hardens, which is when it turns into tartar. And tartar is like a welcoming sign to dental problems and gum disease—opening the door to pain, illness and a host of expensive medical bills.” Unfortunately, Bouncer isn’t the first pet with bad teeth Fur Kids Foundation has helped. Remember, tartar can build up on a dog’s teeth cause tooth decay, gum disease, tooth loss and other medical issues relating to gum disease. It can also be quite painful for the dog to experience, and make your dog’s breath really rank! For those who don’t know, a dog’s eye has three eyelids: an upper and lower lid, as well as a third eyelid that acts like a wipe to keep the eye clear of dust and debris. It also has a tear gland that produces around 35% of the moisture to the dog’s eye. Occasionally, the gland in the third eyelid, located in the corner of the eye next to the dog’s nose, slips out of place. We see it as a red or pinkish blob, and this is what is referred to as a cherry eye. Bouncer’s parents are both disabled, and his mom is his dad's primary caretaker, and the only person in the family receiving disability. His parents struggled knowing that Bouncer needed help, and that they couldn't afford to help him feel better. So they applied to Fur Kids Foundation for some help when they took him to the vet, and we were happy to take the case. Bouncer had eight teeth removed and his cherry eye fixed! We are very happy to report that he is feeling so much better! So, don't forget: Tune into Vic's Basin Buddies every Friday from 9 to 10 on KIML (1270 AM)! This is Leo, a 16 month-old domestic short-hair cat, who is lovingly referred to by her mom as "Weeeo." According to her mom, "Leo is my very best friend." Imagine how distraught her mom was when she realized that, because of the cooler weather, Leo had been tumbling around the dryer for at least 10 minutes before she stopped it! Don’t judge, or laugh, a quick Google search will turn up loads of articles about cats who find their way into a dryer during the colder months for warmth. After all, we often hear stories about cats who climb into the engine of vehicles to get warm. The best way to prevent a clothes dryer accident with your favorite feline is to check inside before you start the dryer; even consider banging on it a few times to startle someone inside. If your cat is in the dryer when it's running, you may not hear your cat meowing or crying out while it’s running, either; they may be too disoriented. But, you would hear a loud thud, like a pair of tennis shoes, as their body moves inside the dryer. If your cat is ever caught in the dryer, bring them to the vet as they may have a head injury, severe bruises or even burns from the heat. If your cat has a head injury, she may lose consciousness or have seizures, be unable to walk a straight line (or seem drunk), may cry out a lot, and the pupils of her eyes may be unequal in size. If your cat shows any of these sings, get her to a vet immediately. Leo’s mom recently lost her job and is in the process of trying to find another one when this happened. Her mom has come into some very hard times recently, and the thought of losing her best friend was too much for her to handle. But she knew Leo needed to be to a vet immediately, so she applied to Fur Kids Foundation. We are happy to report that Leo spent a few days at the vet, but she’s back at home doing well. RoxAnne’s mom brought her to the veterinarian in Gillette, Wyoming, for an ear infection, but while they were there, they also found out that she had a bladder full of stones. If your pup is suffering from bladder stones, they may show the following signs:
If the dog’s bladder is obstructed by bladder stones, the bladder may rupture, which isn't a good thing. A complete obstruction is potentially life threatening and requires immediate emergency treatment. A urinary obstruction will usually be recognized in a dog that is straining to urinate without producing any urine, or is only producing small squirts of urine. You can learn more about bladder stones in dogs via VCA: Struvite Bladder Stones in Dogs. RoxAnne's mom is disabled and is on a limited income. She knew that she couldn't afford the surgery for RoxAnne better, and it was necessary; so she applied to Fur Kids Foundation for help. Luckily RoxAnne had the surgery and is feeling much better now. Angel’s mom is a bit of an angel herself; she adopted Angel as a senior; but that also means that she doesn’t know a lot about this little ball of floof! For her age, Angel has been in great health; that was until recently: she started having seizures! How do you know if your pup is having a seizure? To begin, your dog may hide, appear nervous or seek out being close to the owner. They may be restless, nervous, whining, shaking, or salivating, as well. All of this can last a few seconds to a few hours. During an actual seizure, the dog may lose consciousness or may just have a change in mental awareness such as snapping at invisible objects. If the dog experiences a grand mal, or full-blown seizure with loss of consciousness, all of the muscles of the body contract spastically and erratically. The dog usually falls over on its side and paddles its legs while seeming to be otherwise paralyzed, and can lose control of bowel movements and drool. If the seizure has not stopped within five minutes, immediately seek help from a veterinarian. After the seizure, your dog will typically be confused, disoriented, salivating, pacing, restlessness, or even temporary blindness. You can read more about seizures in dogs via VCA. Angel's mom works part-time and was not expecting something like this to happen, so when she took Angel to the vet, she applied for assistance from Fur Kids Foundation. Angel is now on medication to help control her seizures, and we are happy to report that she should be feeling better soon.
