There is so much for Fur Kids Foundation to be thankful for this year. We’ve held five tremendously successful events—including the Spay Day Drawing, Pics for Pets, Paws for a Cause, Pet-A-Palooza, and Holiday Portraits with the Grinch. We were nominated for, and received, a Hometown Hero Award from the American Red Cross. We’ve seen Yappy Hours grow and help people’s pets with socialization. And, we’ve received a very warm outpouring of support from our community. Because of all this, we’ve been able to help more than 20 families in Campbell County, granting more than $5,000 in aid. We couldn’t have done any of it without the help of our donors, volunteers, and supporters. Tomorrow, while we’re eating our delicious Thanksgiving Day feast, the Fur Kids Foundation board gives thanks to you. Happy Thanksgiving! Psst: Don’t miss our Thanksgiving blog on what not to feed your pet, Don't Let Your Pet Gobble Gobble Some Items on Your Thanksgiving Day Table. Who's excited for Thanksgiving? I know we are at Fur Kids Foundation! Wake up early to get that big ol' bird cooking, turn on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and later watch some football. If it snows, maybe I'll get the family together for a quick game of touch football to work up an appetite for all that food I'm gonna shovel in my mouth.
And then we'll set the table, dish out all the food and get ready to dig in. Chances are we'll also be stumbling over at least one over eager fur kid who's waiting for that one moment when she can snatch the turkey from your plate. But, before we allow you to let that happen, we want to make you aware of some foods that may not be so good for your four legged buddy. We wanted to share with you this Dogster article, Is It Safe for Dogs to Share Thanksgiving Feasts?, as it offered some great information on all the main dishes from turkey and stuffing to mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, and a few others mixed in. And, if you're more of a visual person, check out the infographics (we love infographics), also supplied by Dogster, below. Oh Louie. Like most 11-month-old kittens, Louie is curious and likes to get into just about everything. A few weeks ago, Louie's parents noticed that he wasn't as rambunctious as normal, and he wasn't eating. After contacting the Foundation, Louie's parents took him to the vet to see what had their cat under the weather.
After x-rays were taken, the vet spotted an object in his stomach. It turns out that Louie got ahold of the nipple on a baby bottle, chewed off a bit of it and it got stuck in his tummy. Poor Louie had to get surgery and spent some time in the vet's office recuperating. After the ordeal, Louie's parents reached out to the Foundation to say that they couldn't thank the Foundation enough. "If it wasn’t for the Foundation, I don't know what we would have done." Fortunately, Louie is now healing, and back to his fun loving and active self. His owners are hiding all nipples and pacifiers from him now, and are even keeping an eye on their child's sippy cups. Fur Kids Foundation can only help families with animals who need assistance because of the support from businesses, donations by individuals (like you) and fundraisers. Meet Odie. On any given day, this 6-year-old Rat Terrier spends his days sleeping, sunbathing and chasing bouncy balls. His family also reports that he loves babies and dirty socks! However, a few weeks ago Odie's family noticed that anytime he tried to walk, he would limp on one of his legs.
"I thought maybe he just slept on it wrong and it would be fine in a few days. But, then a couple days later, anytime he tried to stand or walk he would cry out the saddest little cry," Odie's mom said. She knew something was really wrong when he couldn't make the stairs to their bedroom to hog the bed all night. "He couldn't get up the stairs or even stand. I didn't know what to do because I knew we didn't have the money for an emergency vet visit." Odie's family had to wait until the morning, and it was clear that he was getting worse as each minute passed. She called her veterinarian early in the morning, and they told her to get Odie in quickly for some X-rays. Odie's family had heard about Fur Kids Foundation via Facebook, so they completed the online application and waited to hear from us. "They got back to me within an hour! It was the best news to hear that they were going to help Odie get better. Odie's vet appointment revealed that he had a slipped disc in his back, which was affecting one of his legs. The Foundation is very happy to report that Odie is feeling better, and slowing climbing the stairs to hog his parent's bed every night. "I am so incredibly thankful for Fur Kids helping my fur baby. My daughters love him so much and are so happy to see him back to his old self. Thank you so much!" Kilo, a little Pombull—that’s short for a Pomeranian / Pit Bull—is the runt of the litter, but she sure isn’t short on spunk and personality. However, Kilo sure has given her family a scare the past couple of months.
A few days after Kilo’s family picked her and her sister, Roxi up, they realized the pups hadn’t been de-wormed. This family scraped their money together to get them into a vet as soon as possible. The pups bounced back quickly and Kilo was back to playing with toys, chasing her tail, bouncing off of Roxi and so forth. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago, Kilo’s family saw another change in this tiny, sweet little girl. She was more cuddly than normal and would shake as if she was cold. She wasn’t eating as she had been, and she would not drink water. As time progressed, she was vomiting and couldn’t hold her bladder. It appeared that Kilo was very sick, and her family was sick with worry on how they were going to pay for another vet bill. Through Facebook, Kilo’s family learned of Fur Kids Foundation and we were able to help them get through this rough patch. Kilo’s family wrote: “Now baby Kilo’s right back to being her normal self and I couldn't be more grateful! Thank you Fur Kids Foundation; you all are wonderful!” Don’t you just love happy endings—we do. |
