Do you know that one of the most common reasons a dog is taking to the veterinarian is due to a bite wound from another family dog or a fight with an unfamiliar animal? And, for some reason, Fur Kids Foundation has seen a rash of those lately. Unfortunately for Kallie, a 6 year-old pit bull, that was her story, too. Kallie was bitten by her housemate, and the puncture wound left really made her parents concerned for her health. According to VCA Pet Hospitals, dog bites can cause significant injury to the skin—their teeth and jaws can crush or tear muscles and skin, collapse lungs or cause other serious injury to organs. The other thing to consider is that a dog’s mouth is full of bacteria, so any bite that punctures the skin will introduce bacteria below the skin surface, where it can grow and spread. This means that ALL bite wounds can become infected, which can cause abscesses (tissue infections) that can spread to other areas. Obviously, if your pup is bleeding and you can’t get it stopped, is having a hard time breathing, weak, crying or whining, limping, or has pale or blue gums, they need to be taken to the vet immediately. However, please keep in mind that sometimes bite wounds can be so small that they can be easily missed; therefore, it’s important that you take your dog to your vet if you know that they have been in a fight with another animal. Kallie’s family recently changed jobs and were in a tight financial spot and knew that they couldn't afford an emergency vet visit. So, when they took her to the vet, they applied to Fur Kids Foundation for help. Luckily, all Kallie needed was the laceration (aka deep cut) to be cleaned up, and to take some medication afterward to make sure she didn’t have an infection. Fur Kids Foundation is 100% ran by dedicated volunteers who give their time to help the Foundation raise money, take applications, and spread the word about the good work the Foundation does in Campbell County, Wyoming.
